ROAD TRIP PLANNING: ENSURING YOUR VEHICLE IS READY FOR A LONG JOURNEY

You have packed your luggage. You have a schedule in place. But how prepared is your car for the demanding journey? Making minor repairs to your automobile before you go can ensure it’s ready for the trip. Even while you can’t prevent every mechanical failure, you can avoid spending money-saving vacation time in the repair shop by checking your car’s fluids and parts before you hit the road. Here are some pointers to get you going:

Check the fluids

Check the levels of all the fluids in your automobile, including the gearbox, power steering, and windshield washer fluid. Experts advise topping off any low tires before getting on the road. Getting your car’s next oil change before your trip would be worthwhile.

Additionally, make sure the engine coolant (also known as antifreeze) tank in your automobile is filled to the specified amount by the automaker. Nevertheless, even if it is filled to the correct amount, you could still need to replace the coolant if there are floating particles in it or the fluid is clear.

Check the battery

Ensure your automobile’s battery connection is secure and free of corrosion. If there is corrosion, you must unplug the battery and use a wire brush to wipe the contacts. If you don’t know how to check and clean a car battery, leave it to a D Wells Auto shop professional. Batteries have caustic acid that may spill if battery connectors are forced off. As a general rule, you should have your car’s battery tested once a year once it has been on the road for more than two years.

Tire balance and alignment

Uneven tread wear on your tires could indicate improper alignment, and at high speeds, even a slight imbalance in weight can quickly escalate into a severe problem. Give your tires a good balance or rotation to ensure a smooth journey.

Verify that every light and signal is in operation

Switch on each light and sign to check their functionality. Having a friend check the lights while you switch them on will simplify and quicken the process. Additionally, ensure the service light on your car is off; if not, you should remedy the issue before your journey.

Although having a spare tire in your trunk is wonderful, you must be able to change it if necessary. Ensure you have the essential tools, including a tire wrench, a jack, and a cranking mechanism.

Get a tune-up

Getting a tune-up before the trip could be a good idea if it has been a few years since your last one. It often entails changing out worn spark plugs, which may help an engine start more efficiently, increase fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and restore lost power.

Clean your car

At the absolute least, clean the windows for the best possible visibility. If your wiper blades are worn out and smear your glass when they sweep back and forth, you might also want to replace them.
