Jeep Compass: Now with a diesel automatic!

When Jeep launched the Compass back in 2017, the SUV impressed the critics on all fronts but one. Jeep had, sadly, left out the option to choose for an automatic transmission with the Compass. Now that it’s here, let’s have a look at it.

But before that, what is it actually? Well, for those unaware, Jeep had already introduced an automatic transmission pairing with the off-road spec Trailhawk. So, it was only about time the manufacturer went ahead and rolled out the automatic option with the standard Compass.

The car you see here is, essentially, the same as the top-spec Limited Plus Compass. The familiar look hides a 9-speed automatic gearbox and a BS-VI ready engine. The powertrain is exactly the same as the Trailhawk. And it drives the same too! Apart from the Limited Plus variant, Jeep has also introduced the automatic with the mid-spec Longitude trim. So, here’s an overview of what the Jeep Compass automatic brings to the table.

Specifications

There are simply no aesthetic changes to the Jeep Compass automatic. It’s the same familiar design that we’ve seen since 2017. Therefore, there are no changes to the dimensions too, for the car still measures 4,395mm in length, 1,818mm in width, and 1,640mm in height. The ground clearance is also quite respectable at 205kg. The kerb weight for the base-spec variant is 1,537kg. The boot space capacity is also respectable at 438-litres.

Given the opportunity, Jeep has also introduced the BS-VI version of the 2.0-litre Multijet II engine. The engine is capable of churning out 173hp and 350Nm of torque. While only the automatic Compass gets the BS-VI treatment for now, the other variants are expected to be updated soon. In comparison to the BS-IV spec Compass, this one feels more refined and linear in power delivery. The result is more pep in the lower-end but less boost for when the turbo comes into play.

Mileage

The diesel-automatic variants of the Jeep Compass are capable of delivering an identical 17.1km/l to the manual derivatives. The Compass is also available in petrol, which delivers 14.3km/l with the manual gearbox and 14.1km/l with the DCT.

Features

The equipment list for the Jeep automatics remains the same as the standard-spec Compass in the respective variants. The top-spec Limited Plus Compass you see above gets a lengthy equipment list including automatic HID headlamps, cruise control, panoramic sunroof, electrically-adjustable driver’s seat with memory function, steering-mounted audio controls, LED taillamps, 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels, and much more.

Colours

The Compass, as of early-2020, comes in eleven shades, out of which, five are dual-tone, namely, Vocal White / Brilliant Black, Minimal Grey / Brilliant Black, Exotica Red / Brilliant Black, Hydro Blue / Brilliant Black, and Magnesio Grey / Brilliant Black. The single-tone shades are Hydro Blue, Minimal Grey, Exotica Red, Vocal White, Brilliant Black, and Magnesio Grey.
