The freight truck leaves, the crate is yours, and the clock on any damage claim is already running. What you do in the next hour matters more than most people realize, because a used imported engine is guilty until proven innocent and the proof is entirely on you to gather. Skip the inspection and you might install a motor that fails in a week. Do it properly and you either confirm a good buy or catch a problem while you still have recourse. Start before you touch a tool
Photograph the crate from every side while it is still strapped down. Look for punctures, crush damage, oil pooling at the bottom, and any shift in how the engine sits. If the delivery driver is still there and something looks wrong, note it on the delivery paperwork before you sign. That signature is you accepting the shipment, so damage documented at the curb is a claim and damage found later is an argument.
Only then cut the straps. As you unwrap, keep photographing. You are building a record, and records are cheap insurance.
